I like Nara very much. I have been visiting the prefecture almost 2 times a month or something. Nara is much larger than Osaka. Osaka actually is a smallest prefecture in Japan. The place perhaps is very attractive to visit by car, on train, on foot and of course by bike.

Osaka is said to be a really nice hub to go to Nara, Kyoto, Wakayama, Shiga. You can visit these area about an hour or less. Each of area has different facet and culture. Osaka locate really nice place to go to short trip and enjoy unique culture of these history rich places. Better enjoy full of em aren't I ?

R 25 is very popular among car drivers and perhaps for serious cyclists who rides conventional diamond flames. I used to use this way but I was reluctant to. There are so many drivers speeding and passing by you. Japan is a car centered society. You can not expect car drivers morals and manners as you expected in the West. Maybe it is not so bad, I mean compare to other far eastern countries, but the drivers here are as if they owned the road. So I would like to avoid these cars when I am cycling. One of my blogger mates posted an article on Nara and cycling. He lives in Osaka and is a Bromptonaut. Apparently, he went to there by using R 25 and he was fed up with heavy traffic. I suggested there is a nicer way than R 25. He was interested in the way I always use to go to Nara. I planed to cycling around the area and there are another 2 Bromptonauts who wants to go to Nara so we gathered on a lovely Sunday morning.
They are; A2C, otake and kimotoshi.

Along the Yamato gawa(Yamato River), we headed for Nara. The road runs with river is not designed as a cyclists road, but there are some parts of which is not allowed to enter by cars and motor cycles and there is a part of cyclist road included. I was a leader of the tour(again, I am not sure for this is called pottering or not
http://foldersandmobile.blogspot.com/2009/03/kyoto-cycling-by-bromoton-2-2.html) .

Lovely isn't it! The river, green, flowers and no cars!

The cyclist road bending along Isi Kawa(Isi river),which is an armlet of the Yamato gawa, so we headed for the main river as the river runs from Nara Pref.

This station is the key point to go Nara with out using R 25.

One of the reasons I like Nara is that the prefecture is bike friendly. Of course here also is a car centric prefecture just like the rest of area in Japan. The infrastructure of Nara is not so good for its huge region. The roads are not good, a few busses, no tubes and trams, trains leave something to be desired and so on. The authorities decided that Nara should not to be exploited, developed, but using conventional method. That is the bike and cyclist road. Not to be building new roads though they paint some pedestrian paths in green colour so as not to be missed the road. I like this idea although there are some improvements are needed. THIS IS A MUCH NICER IDEA by Osaka City Mayor Hiramatu's, I would say. Perhaps, people in Nara are accustomed this polcy because whenever I am cycling in Nara I noticed the drivers attitude towards bikes. They give us the way! It will not to be happened in Osaka! They even never stop right in front of zebras where you have to stop or speeding down for pedestrians.
It is a kind of miracle in Osaka if it happened!!!! Osakans traffic manners are notorious. Only a few of the people do keep the rule
, of course I do.
I think I will writing it some day in the near future by the way. But think it over again, it must be not so special to give ways for bikes and walkers, it is that the Osaka is too strange...
Any way riding a bike in Nara is quite easy than in Osaka.

kimotoshi is very fond of Japanese sweets so do I.

Sorry, no English.

http://kimotoshi.exblog.jp/i12/

I requested his favourite sweets for the day. We had cuppas and sweets just before running as a starter. I brought two JetBoils just in case. I made some nice cuppas for them with JetBoil.

This is Houryuhji (Hou ryuh temple), one of the world heritages.
The oldest wooden buildings in the world.

The cyclist road begins here. If you are going to Nara, take your Brommie with you (or folders, bikes for that mater) to cycle round the area.

After leaving Houryuhji, we had lunch, our familiar taste Darjireen tyazuke.

This green colour means that this is bike road(not only for bikes).
Sometimes you have to go right side of the way along with the bike roads where as normally you have to go to the left side of the way. Maybe it is complicated but better than heavy traffic lane.

most of nice pics by kimotoshi. cheers!

Our journey is going on. Last time I took down about "pottering" in Japanese lunguage without English translation. I AM NOT FOR SURE that this is what you called "pottering", in Japanese cyclist's term, lots of people using this "pottering" for their cycling activities.I think that kind of recreational cycling is touring or rambling, and I know the word "pottering" means doing something idly in the home, cleaning and gardening or to go here and there, I mean nipping or something... I am not for sure of to go cycling sometimes over 20 miles a day, riders gathered by the same aim and plan for visiting places can be called as "pottering".
I think that is touring.
But mind you, I am nether a NATIVE ENGLISH SPEAKER nor AN EXPERT IN ENGLISH. I would like to know you can use "pottering" as in a manner of lots of Japanese cyclist are using now are right or wrong. If you are in the field of cycling, Japanese language and English please tell me. So I thought this was not "pottering" for I am not sure of the word.
IMO I storngly believe that we do not need to use these strange loan words in our daily conversations in Japanese lunguages. We have enough loan words from abroad and we are alreday out of control for these words. No more strange words, no.

That day I took my Brommie on Hankyu Kyoto Line from Umeda Station to Katura. The observation of the day starts at 9 in the morning. I got on the train on 7.59 and arrived the destination then left for the Villa around 8.40. It took less than 10 minutes or something.
While I am at it, the Villa, I am telling you something about it. The observation requires application before hand on the net, by mail or by first hand. Our "Le Grand Tour 'de la Villa" was started 9.00, There must be the time tables of 10.00, 11.00, 13.00 14.00 and 15.00 a day. Some of the days are not allowed to visit accordance with their plans, schedule etc,. About an hour you are touring in the group of people leading by volunteers from ex employers from The Imerial Household Agency. Speaking of them, I hear one of my friend's mother visited the Villa long time ago, a guide addressed to the group of people "You, the low classes,..." Super Fantastic, isn it?! It should have been a wonderfull experience because you will never ever hear those words except in the TV programmes or historical plays! With these nice words the volunteers leading you the site about an hour. You have to be there 10 minutes before the arranged time. After you entered in the site, you will see the small hall where you have to be waiting until all the members of the party has gathered in one piece. The hall has a small shop for books and goods related to the Villa and the Imperial Properties, and there are coin-operated lockers for your baggage to leave. We parked our Brommies right in front of the gate, there is an officer in uniform in alert, so they are safety.

We went to Toriiwarou because it is near to Kitano Tenmangu and I wanted to have Tyougorou moti and some tea around the area. A shop of Tyougorou moti is opens on the 25th every month in the precincts. Now it is the best season for plum viewing, the shop is open for these special days. There also were lots of people visiting the shrine and enjoying beautiful plum blossoms. Hirano Jinja(Shrine) is very close so we went the shrine on foot.

Then we left for Heian Jingu and Nanzenji

otake wanted to take a picture of me doing something...
A bike shop called Kinetics in the UK which is very famous among the Bromptonauts around the globe for its special modifications and custom build. I sometimes visiting its web site and blog. I posed as a picture used by the shop, requested by otake.

the angle of my face is a bit different...i d better try it again!

After visiting the famous temple gate of Nanzenji, we were heading for a famous tea merchant through Gosho(The Palace) where you can have a nice traditional cuppa in the tea room of the shop. The tea room recently refurbished and very popular among the local, the tourist. You can have some very special selections of tea from koitya(storng mattya), gyokuro, sentya and houjitya. You have a chance to make a bowl of mattya or cup of gyokuro, etc. on your own with an instruction of staff members. So you might have some nice experience of "Kyoto Hospitality" I am an Osakan and maybe a little bit of fussy for service and hospitality because Osaka is a capital of merchants, so I was surprised by this "Kyoto Hospitality" by a staff member. Well, that's Kyoto for you!

After Ippodo, we went pub and cafe recommended by Mrs. otake. After that I went back to Osaka. We cycle around the town about 30 km or something. Mrs otake and otake thank you very much! otake, see you on Nara tour and this must be exciting one again.

Living in Kansai area, it is not easy place to visit.
One can call it Katura Rikyu is the placa like that. Now the area is under controlled by the Imperial Household Agency, and open to the public upon request basis. You can not visit the place like typical sight seeing site such as temples, shrines, castles. You have to be chosen at first by snail or e-mail unless you are not a Very Important Person or a translator or something for them.

I am very fond of visiting buildings and temples, shrines and castles. I like both western and Japanese traditional architectures. I am really like things of before Edo period(about 1600-1864), but this Villa and Nikko Tousyougu is one of the things you have to visit before you die!
Both sites are used to be compared as the heritages of some era. One is very simple and the other is extremely decorative. But the simple one is now much popular though its not-easy-to-visit system. Just before WW II a German urban planner, architect Bruno Taut admired its simple but gorgeous atmosphere and richness of the Villa, he dicoverd it and Japanese people "rediscovered" it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruno_Taut But this is a strange thing I am always wondering. When some one from abroad, especially if he is a Westerner, Japanese people tend to be appreciate it without their thought. "Rediscovered" it?! Were Japanes people abandoned or ignored it?? How and why?? Were Africa and America discovered by some Westerners?? Were native Africans and native Americansthey abandoned, ignored??
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katsura_Imperial_Villa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikkō_Tōshō-gū

It is very interesting place, indeed! If you are really interested in Japanese culture it is highly recommended although you should study very hard about history, culture, human relationships in Japanese society, manners, rules and so on in advance.
This time I am very impressed by two people inside the site. One is a volunteer guide, a retired employee from the Imperial Household Agency, he was super fabulous as a typical native Kyoto! From the beginning of our Tour de Villa, he was obviously frustrated and annoyed by some reason. The way he spoke like " I believe you do not realise what I am talking about, I am afraid" and " You do not have any idea towards these, do you..." sometimes implicitly sometimes exactly! All the visitor were at a loss of course. Well that's Kyoto for you! They are sometimes very harsh and very very very sarcastic and posh! Very different from Osaka.
I felt pity for a western visitor who was using an ear phone guidance with English translation which could not hear the LIVE VOICE from typical Kyoto natives.
Despite the fact, he was friendly to me. He told me some interesting stories of his glory days of working for the Royal Families and their properties and some of the episodes which I should not to take it down.
Thank you, sir!

And there was another person. I thought there might be a some one in uniform but there was not. A national public officer was, in plain clothes, look rather mild than wild. He was an ordinary person without any special character. But he must be a skilled professional officer, I assumed. I am sure some of the people did not realise his attendance. He has got a calm atmosphere so he did not look like bouncer or body guard. I do not think it is wise to describe him in detail for national interest sake, but I should say he is an expert of guard officer from Imperial Guard Headquarters.
And I think this is a kind of Japanese culture, I mean it is not obvious but you could tell from something from something....

The inside is a fashion of about 17th century's Tea house style. You would be realise that modern tea ceremony is far from Grand Master Sen no Rikyuu.

according to the wether forcast its goin 2 b a bloody cold day and it wont b fine thats the info i got b4 left 4 kyoto but it turned out 2 b a lovely day!

inside a tea house i didn know i was teken...i was serious 2 c the things.

gotcha! i seriously c the camera.

Of course Brommie with me or she was taking me to Kyoto. It is Kyoto I have to wear my kimonos, no, I just wanted to wear them. The place does not matter actually. But you can not wear kimonos on the diamond frames that does matter, doesn't it!

After the Villa we headed for old tea house Nakamura ken for a nice cuppa and some sweets.
http://www.nakamuraken.co.jp/ Sorry no english.

http://www.nakamuraken.co.jp/
We headed for Touji (Tou-Temple but actully being described as To-ji Temple in English) temple since it is 21 and there is a monthly market. There were so many tourist so we left there soon.

Then we went to old restaurant Toriiwarou for lunches because they have special menu for lunch time.
See detail of Toriiwarou. Sorry no english.

This is not the end of the story, this is the half way of our tour!
The story will be continued. See you soon.

latest mod of my brommie EXTRA2 stolen, auction and back 2 me /ブロの最近の改造 番外編 2 盗難、オークション出品、取り戻し

So my Brommie has returned to me.
Though some of the parts recently installed have been missing.
They are: reverse brake levers, stand, Brooks Flyer Special S saddle and saddle position adopter with quick release lever, Black Diamond's head light. These parts can be used as standard parts for any bicycles in general.

Brompton is very unique. The design and its concept is very original. You need special attention for Brompton. What do I mean by that? I will tell you.
Shimano is the one of the giants of the bicycle parts makers like Microsoft in computers. BTW I am a Mac user :-) Almost all the bicycle in the market use Shimano's parts. Well, I am not sure is there any bike like "no Shimano parts configuration" because I am not in the know of bikes, I am not a hobby rider, sorry. Perhaps there is bike like that in Europe, especially very expensive bikes. The company has influential power towards the bike market. Shimano is Japanese comapany so there is actually no bikes with out Shimano's parts! Brompton is the one with out Shimano's.

the handle bar was replaced by the bike shop, saying "a lad in my shop says thats not popular" ... uh, really? but they kept it in the shop and i got it. i m lucky indeed since i got a such a sense ordinary japanese dont like it!

skate wheels were replaced as cheap trindles by the bike shop.
"oh, we changed them new wheels which i bought em @ DIY store since former wheels were dirty" "wheres my skate wheels, sir?" "threw em away when cleanin up for new years." "very well, sir. very well"

the brake levers are very cheap lookin ones. 4 taiwan bromptons?! not sure.

Well, the thief has not been detained. He is a cyclist and lives in Osaka.
There is a Brooks Flyer Special S Saddle I used to own but now some one use it somewhere. That must be the thief or his friend(girl friend? coz its an 'S' for female) or some one who does not know that the Brooks Flyer Special S is mine. So you bought it somewhere or given by some one there
is possibility of mine lolz

to be con'd.

       The Auctioneer Says:

*translation from the top picture "u liar"

UK BROMPTON used incl. postage M6 green colour. Bought in 06 and rode it sometimes. Excellent condition for used but there are minor scratches. Now completely over hauled so you can ride it right away. the model is the highest configuration of Brompton at that time which has rear rack, dynamo lighting system & inflater with 3x2=6 speed. 3 speed model is maybe good enough like utility bikes, but it has much lighter 2 speeds on it so you are free from stresses even if you are living in steep hills area! But please remember this is an used item, be care for bidding if you are not sure from the pictures above. The item cannot meet a claim for any damages. Postage will be covered. It is
the end of the year and I would like to ask bidders only who can transfer the money immediately after the knock down of 29th Dec., 30th Dec. is a dead line. Thank you.

oh well he knew well....

latest mod of my brommie EXTRA!!

The Brompton Was Stolen by The Thief

Wat!? wat the hell are you talkin bout,,, wats that STOLEN ARTICLE mean,,,uh??
The voice from my mobile phone echoed. The bloke, at first erupted, then at a loss, did not know what exactly to answer the caller. The bloke mumbling and shouting again. "I,I,I am a proper selle
r, wat do you mean that the Brompton is STOLEN ARTIKLE, stolen article??, uh, who the hell are you!! how, how, how can you prove that its yours...

oh yeah, it used 2 b a P TYPE BROMPTON but modified by a bike seller ??? stolen by the thief, sold to a bike shop by the man who claimed 2 be TAKADA, that must b a fake coz theres no proper docs or things anyway, and the bike shop modified my Bromie as above.

I interrupted the bloke, "Sir, this case has already been a police business, Osaka Hukei (Osaka Prefectural Police) is doing it and I can not say many things about this, you know, I suppose you might be a victim as well. There will be a phone call from the detective soon and I wish you could help us..."

YAHOO Auctions is the largest auction site run by YAHOO Japan. I found my stolen Brompton on the page of this as above. Terrible though it is, but it is true that the auction is useful 4 those who is not fair! It is not familiar for those who is victimised...
I bid and won 2 have got it with the great help by my friends.

My Brompton was stolen by a thief!
The details will be coming soon(I cant write it most of the story though lolz)
With a great help from my friends, my Brommie is back in my hands, though some of the problems are unsolved...
Thanks a lot, my friends !! xxx

To be continued.
